Osteoarthritis according to Ayurveda

As a first blog on this website I would like to explain in short how osteoarthritis is considered according to Ayurveda. As many of you suffer today of the illness I would like to give also some simple lifestyle hacks to conquer some side effects that are related with the illness.
According to Ayurveda Osteoarthritis is primarily a Vāta caused illness.
Vata means air. The qualities of nature of air can be defined as fresh, mobile, light and dry.
A Vata caused illness means that Vata is out of balance. The qualities of the illness are expressed by these Vata qualities: cracking joints, irregular appearance of pain, feeling bloated, dry skin, constipation, difficulties to sleep, waking up very early in the morning without being able to sleep again, etc.
The issues might appear more starting in autumn as this is Vata season and the issues might find more relieve in summer.
In modern medicine many of these complaints are not treated with the illness but they are important to improve the overall quality of life and to support conquering osteoarthritis.
Osteoarthritis also involves the presence of toxines, which contributes to deterioration of joints. According to Ayurveda toxines are being accumulated due to inappropriate diet, insufficient digestive fire, etc according to a persons base constitution. This is why it is important to adjust diet in order to conquer osteoarthritis: to remove the cause of the issues. I will write my next blog about how to adjust your diet.
Lifestyle hacks to balance Vata
As I wrote above: osteoarthritis is considered as a Vata caused illness. The qualities of nature of air can be defined as fresh, mobile, light and dry.
When Vata is out of balance In Ayurveda we try to counterbalance the Vata qualities by the opposite: mainly by introducing warmth and moist (water/oil). Here are some simple lifestyle hacks to counter balance Vata:
Drink 2-3 mugs of warm water first thing in the morning, add some ghee or a little bit of lemon
Gentle (at half one’s capacity) exercise to keep joint motion and muscle tone
At night do an auto-massage with warm oil: sesame, coconut or mustard oil according your constitution. Do your massage from head to feet and especially don’t forget your foot soles. If you have little time, massage only your feet and foot soles. You don’t need to use a lot of oil. Use enough to cover the skin lightly. Then take a warm shower or bath.
Go to sleep before 11:00PM
Eat cooked and warm meals and make sure the dish is not too dry. Always add a little bit of an oily element. Adding some spices supports the digestion of the meal.
Remove everything that is dry, cold or light in your diet
All above advices will help to pacify Vata and will support the first steps to remove toxines. My advice is: try it for 4 weeks and observe the changes that happen during this time.
